The job

As one of the UK’s leading growers of fresh and frozen fruit, A.J & C.I Snell proudly supplies major supermarkets across the country. From February to April, our work focuses on tunnel construction and planting, offering employees the chance to work up to 5 days a week (39 hours). During the peak harvest season, from May to October, we focus on picking strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, and blueberries. During this time, we operate 6 days a week, providing opportunities for increased hours, with employees working approximately 48 hours per week.

Want to work outdoors and as a team?

A.J and C.I Snell employ active people who enjoy working outdoor and as part of a team. You will have the chance to work alongside the A.J and C.I Snell staff, learning all there is to know about harvesting berries. Large majority of our pickers make friends within their teams and enjoy working and living closely together throughout the season.

Picking is hard work

Picking is demanding and there is an element of bending and lifting. You will be required to pick target kilograms of berries per hour, on a piece work basis. The target will depend on the quality of the crop, the weather and time of the season.
During the summer months work starts early; we aim to pick the fruit in the cooler part of the day. All the berries are grown in different ways. All strawberries are grown on a table top system and with excellent access to the fruit. Training will be given for the correct picking of each fruit type. Most employees develop and good technique within the first seven to ten days, full training is provided.

Rates of pay

All rates of pay are in line with government requirements.  All employees will be paid a minimum hourly rate of the National Living Wage, overtime is payable after 48 hours in a week at approximately 1.25 x hourly rate. Holiday pay is paid in accordance with national law. You will also have UK taxes deducted.

Earn more than the NLW

There is the opportunity to earn substantially more than the NLW based on:
Quality of berries you pick | How much you pick | How long you pick for
Depending on the availability of work (which depends on customer demand, time of season and the weather) we will normally work 6 days a week. and usually up to 48 hours, this may increase to 60 hours during the peak harvest period. You will have one day off a week, this is determined by the sales / supply into the retailers and is usually a Saturday.
All seasonal workers must be aware that crops can be delayed by weather conditions. This means you may work less than five days per week, but with a minimum of 32 hours. If this happens it is generally for a short period of time and most workers can make this time back as the season gets busier. You will be paid fortnightly. The money will be transferred to your personal account or to pre-paid bank card that we will originate for you as part of our induction process.
